Digestion Enhanced!

Enzymes are a favorite category at Vitamin Express. One of our top companies is Enzymedica. They specialize in enzymes and their Enzymedica Digest Gold is one of our favorite all purpose enzymes that sets the standard for complete and effective use. The Glutenease 2X offers strong support for those with gluten intolerance but not intended to treat celiac disease.

Digest Gold  GlutenEase 2X

Often people leave the table feeling overly full and before long develop bloating. An aid for this situation is digestive enzymes. Enzymes are necessary for life and play an important role in every function of the body from digestion to growth, from breathing to reproduction, from energy to blood coagulation.

Digestion begins with chewing food and the secretion of amylase enzyme starting the digestive process that continues in the stomach. There pepsin and hydrochloric acid and bile are released. This digestive process aids the further release of enzymes present in the food we eat. If the food has become denatured those enzymes can go missing. As we age our release of hydrochloric acid reduces and pancreatic enzymes as well.

From the stomach the food matrix goes into the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum, where enzymes perform a multitude of biological functions. The pancreatic enzymes help create vibrant health by breaking down protein (proteolytic enzymes), fats (lipolytic enzymes), carbohydrates (amyolytic enzymes), vegetable matter (cellulose enzymes), milk sugar (lactase enzymes) through the metabolic process of a series of complex chemical reactions. This process is well worth paying attention to as the body's requirements of sufficient enzymes relates issues of indigestion.

Collagen and Bone Health

Micronutrients You Rarely Consider In
Healing Bone Fractures

Everyone is at risk of fracturing a bone from a fall, sport activities, or a car accident and it is all the more likely to happen to people suffering from osteoporosis. Bone fractures are one of the most painful injuries and require a lengthy recovery time.

The most common bone fracture, especially in active adults and children, is a broken leg, and often involves a tibial (or shinbone) fracture. In the US, approximately 492,000 tibial fractures are reported every year resulting in close to 400,000 hospital days. The usual time for healing a tibial fracture is 12 to 16 weeks. However, this is often delayed due to a high incidence of complications requiring strong painkillers for the patient. In European countries, osteoporosis related hip fractures were reported to be 620,000 according to a 2010 report.

A common perception is that vitamin D and calcium are the only nutrients needed for healthy bones or that they aid in the fracture healing process. However, this overlooks the fact that the framework of the bone on which calcium and other minerals are deposited is made of protein – collagen. Without healthy collagen, bone cannot form and function properly. Healthy bone formation depends not only on sufficient amounts of calcium and vitamin D, but more importantly on a proper supply of vitamin C, the amino acids lysine and proline, and other collagen supporting micronutrients. Since the human body cannot produce vitamin C and lysine internally, the deficiency of these critical nutrients is very likely and can be further depleted by stress associated with a bone fracture.

In a randomized double blind placebo-controlled clinical trial* involving 131 patients with tibial shaft fracture, we evaluated the effect of supplementation with collagen building micronutrients on the fracture healing time. The ages of study participants ranged from 15 to 75. We observed that the group of patients taking essential micronutrients containing vitamin C, lysine, proline, and vitamin B6 experienced faster fracture healing. Their fractures healed in 14 weeks, while it took 3 weeks longer for the patients taking the placebo (sugar pill) to experience similar healing. In addition, in about 25% of the patients in the supplemented group the bone fractures healed in as early as 10 weeks, while this was noted in only 14% of the patients in the control group. The patients in the supplemented group also reported improvements in a general feeling of well-being.

This study shows that a frequently missing factor in bone health – healthy collagen – plays an important role in optimum healing of bone fractures. A simple supplementation with specific micronutrients could greatly reduce healing time and patient suffering as well as lessen the economic burden on patient families and the healthcare system.

Vitamin C, L-Lysine, Collagen and Cancer

Strong Connective Tissue:
A Key factor in Controlling Cancer Metastasis

The term “connective tissue” is frequently discussed in association with skin or joint disorders, and many people are not aware of how important it is in other chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Over 90% of cancer deaths are due to the extensive spread of cancer (metastasis). Cancer cells metastasize by breaking the connective tissue barrier that surrounds them. The strength and stability of connective tissue depends on an optimum production of collagen fibers and the prevention of uncontrolled tissue destruction. An abundant availability of several micronutrients, especially vitamin C, and the amino acids lysine and proline, is essential for this function. Unlike most animals, humans are not capable of internal production of vitamin C and lysine. Yet, most of the cancer research is conducted on mouse models that do produce vitamin C. To overcome this barrier, our research institute utilized a special type of mice that mimic human metabolism in respect to the lack of internal vitamin C production.

We studied whether the presence or absence of vitamin C in the diet of these mice can affect the growth and spread of cancer1. The results showed that dietary supplementation with just vitamin C could significantly impair the growth of tumors, which were 64% smaller than those developed in mice not taking vitamin C. More importantly, tumors in vitamin C supplemented animals were surrounded by a strong border of collagen fibers (see the picture). This makes it more difficult for the cancer cells to escape and spread into the tissue. In contrast, the collagen border was absent in tumors originating in the mice with a shortage of dietary vitamin C; consequently this allowed the cancer cells to move freely and spread. This impressive result removes any doubts about the critical role of vitamin C in cancer.

Even more, by combining vitamin C with other collagen supporting micronutrients including lysine, proline and others, cancer metastases to the lungs, liver and kidneys could be curbed by about one third 2 . This confirms the enhanced efficacy of micronutrient synergy compared to individual micronutrients.

In addition to the direct effect of vitamin C on tumor growth, we observed that mice supplemented with this nutrient had inflammation markers reduced by about 90%. This effect of vitamin C is very important because low-grade inflammation is common in cancer patients and is one of the causes of weight loss and poor health.

More than 40 years after the “War on Cancer” was declared, cancer remains the second leading cause of death, and there is no pharmaceutical solution in sight. With this background, our research brings a better understanding of the value of micronutrients in the defense against cancer and provides hope to millions of cancer patients.

Back in 1982

At that time the thoughts of 2014 were far away. Within that short period of time, as times before but at a much brisker and riskier rate, much has changed. There was at that time a certain optimism and fighting spirit that enshrined the mock Latin phrase Illegitimum non carborundum as we battled with the Food and Drug Administration's Draconian policies, the DEA strong arm tactics and incessant harassment court trials. Nevertheless, we continued to exists and thrive and grow and unite and develop. With time legislation was passed that compromised the battleground and offered a period of hope that the future options to see medical science include and provide nutritional aids for disease and conditions that require such help would emerge victorious.

In 1982 the world viewed from San Francisco looked hopeful as we grasped the significance of the highly toxic Vietnam War with pictures of US soldiers standing before forests with leafless trees and the horrors of Agent Orange. There was great hope that such experience along with radiation poisoning from WWII would point everyone towards the path of sanity in the environment of the earth and the human body. So 1982 was not a hallowed, wonderful time. It was a contentious time and a growing battle emerged even greater than the 1970's between the pharmaceutical corporations and chemical factories and a small but vocal and passionate group of health nutritionists, nutritional biochemists, environmentalist and health products manufacturers. At that time they were a small insignificant economic threat, but focused. The need to protect society is of utmost importance and the highest item on that list is to protect the health of the nation.

However, the pharmaceutical industry saw the potential of this small minority of health nutrition oriented sector's ability to shift perception and reduce its wealth. Having secured the leadership and control of the Food and Drug administration they wanted to bring everything under their control and began a concerted effort to minimize the health nutritional industry. However, once the public was engaged in the struggle new legislation was passed that gave a respite to the health nutrition industry and provided promises to help secure its proper place in American society to benefit the general welfare.

At the same time changes were afoot by large Pharmaceutical corporations. The biggest break thought imaginable occurred. The pharmaceutical industry got the permission from the government to advertise in the media their drugs, no other country to this day has such a right. And it worked! Pharmaceutical ads appeared everywhere, taking over magazines with three and four page ads, long life style media tv ads and Americans became the most drugged population on the face of the planet. Pharmaceutical drugs became pricey products everyone needed, doctors prescribed with bonuses added to their office visits, and insurance companies never had it so good - money in everyone's pocket and insuring that alternative medicine's threat of being bad for repeat business would be laid to rest.

No longer does one find articles in the major media extolling the benefits of vitamins and minerals and enzymes and amino acids and new discoveries such as l-carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, ubiquinol, and PQQ along with the latest herbal reports. Nevertheless, people are still searching for answers and coming more and more towards natural alternatives. However, it feels like the 1980's again- but a weakened, unfocused dispirited approach. Many great companies have been compromised to mainstream and reducing choices, small health food stores swallowed up by larger markets with more of a corporate leaning and share holders to please. The struggle to provide health products is a target of the silent trade agreements and international efforts of Pharma to impose its will through courts, legislation and the CODEX Alimentarius. The internet gives some solace but is off balanced by effective organized fear tactics- nothing really new, just more pervasive and the public remains confused and tired. Purchasing is done by sound bites off Amazon and mega websites.

And so here is 2014. The majority of educated people think fluoride is good for their teeth- which couldn't be further from the truth. The nation's corn and soy and wheat are almost entirely GMO harvested , chemically sprayed, and nutritional levels of conventional food keeps dipping lower and lower. New plastics emerge constantly and each a little more different and toxic. Three days in the hospital with nothing special going on easily costs over $30,000.00. Bees and insects are on the wane, electro magnetic fields and towers for communication and entertainment occupy school roofs, hospitals and playgrounds. Cholesterol drugs are recommended for overweight children, fluoride for infants with their first two teeth appearing, elderly on 15 to 20 pharmaceutical drugs from several different doctors. Strange disease conditions emerging such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, strange cancers, depression drugs that are habit forming- has the medical world lost much of its purpose to heal? When drug related deaths annually in the hundreds of thousands become so prominent as though it's all an insignificant experiment something is frighteningly wrong in this experience.

So here we are in 2014 with an unrealized dream from 1982 and the years that came afterwards. A dream that we could be sharing the experience of genomic testing for epigenetic nutritional deficiencies and singular nucleotide polymorphisms to see which nutrient can aid turning on and off certain genes to benefit our health. A dream that combined meditation, exercise, good pure food and water into glowing health and logevity. We could be living in a pesticide free environment having procured natural alternatives from herbs and insects. We could be living in an electrical free environment where proper shielding is used to protect against radiation. We could be sharing in health, wealth and peace brought to us through education, science, and technology. Yet, reality shows we are a weakened nation of democracy where the last primary election in California less than 20% of registered voters voted. Money rules legislation and executive decisions while a shadow government plays with the future. For many education is passed off as boring and nothing to be learned. Apathy and ignorance is abundant in an age of endless entertainment and self aggrandizement- certainly not the best forecast for a thriving healthy future. We are entering an age of centralized control contrary to nature's abundance of complexity. So what does 2034 hold in store for us? I have a great sense of optimism that just as the body always seeks health so does a society always seek health. There are obviously going to be some fierce battles fought with dramatic changes.
A few final words... Our bodies control our lives and easily and readily communicate dissatisfaction. We often are slow learners and harmony occurs when physical reality and conscious thought come together. Peace and silence aid this. However, we are islands in a sea of activities that confound us, and surprise us. Along this path we must carefully consider what frame of mind we shall have. The more rigid our belief systems the less choice we will have. Struggling internally we move forward taking the hand of destiny seeking our answers. Reviewing the past and living our moments as moments dear and frivolous, with appreciation or complaints, as the curtain falls, the cover laid over, the unimaginable takes place.
