DHEA, Phosphatydl Serine, alpha lipoic acid, carnitine

April 1996 - Print | Index

Exciting News!

Finally, DHEA(dehydroepiandrosterone) is back in the marketplace thanks to your support for the DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act)! It was your grass root action that accomplished it. DHEA is certain to come down in price as well. DHEA, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, is the precursor to all sex hormones. Levels are highest in the prime of life, ages 18-25, then production gradually begins to slow down. We have DHEA in 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 250 mg tablets.

Another BAN is lifted on the import and sale of Stevia with the use of Stevia as a dietary supplement. However the FDA has not approved its traditional Paraguayan use to facilitate healing of cuts and wounds, nor to help clear up skin ailments such as acne or blemishes. It has not approved its common South American internal use to balance blood sugar levels or its use as a mouth wash to inhibit oral bacteria that cause tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease. It appears the oral bacteria love the sweetness of Stevia and eat it, but because they cannot metabolize Stevia they starve to death.

Stevia is in wide use in many countries as leaves, concentrate and as a highly refined extract called Stevioside (300 times sweeter than sugar) yet without calories. Presently, the FDA has been petitioned to declare it a safe food. We sell the leaves, extract, and concentrate.

Supplement for the Brain

Phosphatidyl Serine (PS) plays an important role in the neurotransmitter systems of the brain. In 23 peer-reviewed studies, more than half of which were double-blind, PS was shown to have substantial benefits to learning and memory.

PS is not common in the food supply and has been used for people over the age of 50 or for damaged brain cells due to disease, alcohol, drug use, pollution, and for epilepsy. PS maintains nerve connections (synapses) in the brain, and various higher mental activities. PS is important for nerve cell differentiation, activation and renewal, neurotransmitter production and release, and maintaining electrical current flows in and between cells. We have several sources.

Alpha-lipoic acid is finally getting some highly deserved press. It is a remarkable metabolic antioxidant readily transported through cellular membranes and it helps recycle other antioxidants! What this means is that when vitamin E quenches lipid peroxidation a vitamin E radical is formed and that radical is reduced back to vitamin E by lipoic acid. It does a similar task with vitamin C, in turn Vitamin C can also reduce vitamin E.

Not only does lipoic acid play a role in lipid (fat) environments, but also in aqueous (water) environments where it can inactivate hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, hypochlorous acid, and nitric oxide. Lipoic acid acts as a catalyst and chelator. In Europe it has been used for detoxification of heavy metal poisoning, possible application in atherosclerosis, side effects of diabetes, oxidative stress, and it may exert a protective effect against the formation of cataracts.

Most recent research now indicates that Lipoic Acid prevents HIV replication. It has the ability to protect the genetic material, DNA, in the cell nucleus and protect NF kappa-B in the cytosol and most important it is able to bolster the cellular glutathione levels in the system and in lymphocytes!

Presently there are several companies that sell lipoic acid. We have sold it for about five years from Cardiovascular Research; now it is also available from Jarrow, Twin Lab, and others.

Creatine for More Muscle

Creatine monohydrate is a naturally occurring compound produced mainly in the liver and involving the pancreas and kidneys. In human clinical studies it has proven to increase force production and muscle mass. Dr. Julian Whitaker recommends its use for "reversing the symptoms of age-related deterioration of muscle" (Health and Healing, March, 1994).

Creatine supplement converts into phosphocreatine within the muscle. Phosphocreatine is critical to the maintenance and continued production of energy by donating a phosphate group to ADP to make ATP, the substrata utilized for powering all body movements and biochemical reactions in the body.

Creatine is unique in that it increases the production of proteins and builds muscle (anabolic) and it also acts to decrease the breakdown of muscle protein (anticatabolic). These benefits could be used to retain muscle mass as a person ages. Absorption is best after some exercise. Jarrow produces an excellent combination product of 1000mg creatine combined with Co-Q10 60 mg.

Next? Acetyl l-carnitine

Acetyl l-carnitine is incredible and the research papers keep coming out on it. It plays a key role in maintaining normal brain and nerve function during aging. It's so incredible it has been shown to maintain cellular membrane activity, and to restore age related membrane changes! Acetyl l-carnitine is an antioxidant- it scavenges super oxide anion radicals which can otherwise damage membrane lipids. It increases cerebral blood flow. It has a major effect on short term memory.

Acetyl l-carnitine effects major depression and changes in the circadian hormonal rhythms, similar to melatonin. We have it from Twin Lab, Source Natural, and many others.

My Morning Routine

After a long night's work and not much sleep, I need excellent nutrition to function the next day. Here's my attempt to keep myself active and happy until I get that needed rest. I drink one glass of tepid water. Then I mix one level teaspoon of Natren's Bionate acidophilus, one teaspoon of Natren's Bifidus and one teaspoon of Natren's I. B. Bulgaricus in another glass of tepid water. I then add three tablespoons of Green Magma, and two teaspoons of New Chapter's Herbal Ambrosia and one teaspoon of GAIA's Amaloxy elixir to the drink and one teaspoon of pau d'arco concentrate. Believe it or not the combination is very palatable and enjoyable.

After forty minutes or so I eat a bowl of muesli and follow it with one tablet of Alacer's Super Gram III, two capsules of Jarrow's Ginkgo/OPC 95 (pycnogenols), three tablets of Jarrow's Antioxidant optimizer, two tablets of Strix's Bilberry concentrate, one tablet of Nature's Life Stress Tab B "600", one tablet of Source Naturals Ultra Cal Night, one capsule of Twin Lab Super E plus Selenium, two caps of Nature's Way Chlorofresh, and one capsule of Twin Lab's acetyl l-carnitine.

I then attempt to take fifteen minutes or as long as possible to meditate with no thoughts of anything. I then drink another glass of tepid water. During some point in time in this routine, I have taken a shower with African Formula's Therapeutic Botanical Skin Wash, an incredible solution that heals the skin and makes it smooth. I then shave using Paul Pender's Lemon Balm Shave Cream. It takes very little to soften the beard.

Then I drink one more glass of water but this time it is mixed with a scoop of Designer Protein and a scoop of Bernard Jensen's Whole Life Food Blend and I chew up a couple tablets of Jarrow's Co-Q10 + Creatine and go on my way. So there you have it! I don't necessarily recommend my hours to anyone but the products I use certainly give me energy and keep me feeling fit and bouyant throughout the day. But under any condition I can't emphasize enough the great importance that water makes for everything to function well.

Our Newest Store

The Mill Valley store opened its doors in the summer of 1995. The store has our first customer computer station in which you can get in-depth information on vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs, specialty nutrients, dietary programs, homeopathy, and even ailments.

As was done with Berkeley Vitamin Express, we establish the foundation for products in the store and you, our customers, point the direction in which the store will grow and change. We in turn keep you informed of the latest products and information in the world of nutrition.

Vitamin Express in Mill Valley is at Miller and Camino Alto, opposite Tamalpais High School and right next door to Safeway. Michael LeVesque bought True Foods, the present location, from Tom Padrick who sends this note...

"Please accept my heart-felt thank to all of you for your loyal support and friendship since 1988. It has been a rewarding and satisfying time for me and my family. Please give Michael and Vitamin Express a warm Mill Valley welcome. You will love it!"

The BEST of health to you!
Michael LeVesque, President
