Antioxidants aren’t your enemy…they’re your friend!

A recent re-issue of an attack on antioxidants is once again the focus of the news media.

Last year when it was issued it was dismissed as insignificant evidence due to the nature of its composition and overwhelming evidence to the contrary of the findings.

Using meta-analysis the researchers went from pooling 815 trials to 47 to finally find any association of Vitamin E and other antioxidants with early mortality.* Of course many other factors could have been involved.

Meanwhile, a lead researcher, Dr. Pavlik, has done a study with 847 people with an average age of 74 followed for almost five years. His reasearch was just presented at the American Academy of Neurology 60th Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois on April 12-19, 2008 demonstrating that when Vitamin E was taken at 2000 IU daily, it resulted in a 26% reduction in all-cause mortality compared to no improvement for those who were not taking Vitamin E. This research was specifically designed to look at the effects of Vitamin E.

Beware reports that go against established scientific research. Data for Vitamin E is well established and here are just a few scientific facts:

  • Vitamin E is required for fertility; in fact the Greek based word for Vitamin E “tocopherol” means “ability to bear young”.
  • There has never been found an upper limit of toxicity for Vitamin E for humans.
  • The Institute of Medicine sets a daily upper limit of vitamin E at 1500 IU. The National Academy of Sciences has defined a "Tolerable Upper Intake Level" (UL) for vitamin E at 1100 IU for synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) and 1500 IU for natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol).
  • Vitamin E is more effective taken with vitamin C and other anti-oxidants.
  • The following substances can interfere with vitamin E absorption: chitosan, glucomannan, estrogens (contraceptive pill), chlorine, iron- as ferrous sulfate, pharmaceutical antibiotics, pharmaceutical antacids, the pharmaceuticals cholestyramine-colestipol-probucol, olestra, alcohol, tobacco, fish oils and cod liver oils.
  • Anyone using Pharmaceutical Anticoagulants, such as heparin, should not consume more than 400 IU per day of supplementary Vitamin E (as this combination can increase the risk of excessive bleeding and should consult their health care provider).
  • It is recommended to avoid vitamin E supplementation 2 to 4 weeks prior to surgery. Afterwards it is an aid in the healing process.
  • Approximately 30% of the adult population of the USA has low blood Vitamin E levels.

Health and Your Genes

We are at the beginning of the 21st Century and as of 2003 the human genome has been mapped and for the first time. The field of genetics is discovering that nutrition can alter wellness in a major fashion that turns off the switches for the proclivity towards degenerative diseases or turns on the defensive mechanisms of protection against degenerative diseases.

For an individual to know their genetic weakness is not diagnosis of disease, nor someone has a disease. It is not suggesting a cure, it is information. It is information that assists one in changing the environment in which the gene expresses itself. What it does indicate is that you can find  certain genetic weaknesses and aid your body's wellness.

In the San Francisco Chronicle, Friday, November 30, 2007 page A7 top of the page it is head lined ‘Silenced genes’ may weaken defenses against disease. Dr Nora Volkow, director, National Institute on Drug Abuse stated, “It’s not just about the sequence of your genes, but how that sequence is turned on and off by environmental exposures that is likely to determine whether you will be healthy.”

Our April newsletter focused on genes and epigenetic influences. Now a new science is emerging, Nutrigenomics. It is looking at nutritional formulations specifically designed for the individual to compensate for particular genetic vulnerabilities that can make a profound difference in ones health and well-being.

This is truly revolutionary and empowering our ability to seek healthy alternatives. Scientists are able to identify small variations in the genetic code that can lead to diminished health and wellness and are aware of specific genes that respond to targeted nutritional supplementation.

This is an invaluable service to anyone who wants to know if what they are taking as supplements makes sense, or should be increased in particular nutrients and of course altering other life style habits.

Solgar, one of our finest supplement manufacturing companies has teamed up with GeneLink, the leader in developing DNA based genetic tests for health and wellness. This is the first step in the science of Nutrigenomics and they are offering such a test along with nutrients that strengthen one's health.

The Emergency for Weight Control

Being overweight creates dangers of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, respiratory illness, cancer, joint problems, inflammation, and a multitude of other factors that affect our elimination, nervous system, digestion, and reproductive system.

The increase in obesity is a national problem. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys the rate of change in our children is of utmost concern. It has nearly tripled in the last 19 years.

1976-1980

2003-2004

2 to 5 year old

5% overweight

13.9% overweight

6 to 11 year old

6.5% overweight

18.8% overweight

12 to 19 year old

17.4% overweight

Risk for heart disease is occurring as early as the age of 25.

Reducing weight is a complex solution with many options and much one can do for it. Here is an option well worth trying with great benefits. However, it needs to be cut out and put on the refrigerator or bathroom mirror as a reminder.

  1. Enjoy your food- really chew it and taste it and savor it. If it only tastes sweet or too salty change it.
  2. Take a multiple vitamin after eating, perhaps Carlson’s CardiRite, and one capsule 500mg of L-Carnitine.
  3. Walk after eating for a half hour at a normal pace inside or outside.
  4. After walking drink one large glass of warm water.
  5. Then sit erect in a straight but comfortable chair with your hands on your knees in a quiet place for a half hour with your eyes closed and relaxed and not thinking.
  6. Go to bed early by at least 11:00 p.m.
  7. Before rising from bed in the morning rub your hand in a circular motion counter-clockwise for 50 revolutions and then 50 clockwise on your stomach and intestinal area.
  8. Avoid at all costs all artificially sweetened foods, gum, and drinks.

If you try these simple steps, it will change your view of many things. With time your body’s intelligence will emerge and you will renew contact and confidence in its ability to guide you in food and snack selection, healthy activities, and enjoyable pastimes. Life will change because you are giving yourself time and time to be in your body. Try this for at least two weeks daily and see what happens. Let us know your progress and we’ll include it in future newsletters. Good Luck!
