Stevia Given the Green Light by the FDA

Nothing like getting the big companies behind a nutrient -- suddenly it becomes GRAS, i.e. "generally recognized as safe" by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The FDA has refused to recognize the benefits of stevia for years as the health food industry fought to have it recognized as a safe alternative to processed cane sugar. Meanwhile, the rest of the world has been using it instead of refined cane sugar.

How did this remarkable change take place? Stevia was front page news in the Wall Street Journal. Coca Cola wants to launch products using stevia as the sweetener. Shortly after the story was printed the FDA issued the ruling. They had pressure from suppliers Cargill and Merisant Company. Looks like now we know who to call to get things accomplished. Thanks!

Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Red Yeast Rice Beneficial for the Heart

Studies using large numbers are always estimates and offer interesting statistics, especially when studies are merged together. Keeping in mind that statistics are approximations of the truth, it was still inspiring to see the high numbers reported in a mega study in the China Journal of Medicine (Ong HT, Cheah JS, Chin Med J (Engl), 2008; 121(16): 1588-94.). It involved 11,324 subjects who received modest dosages of omega 3 fatty acids. There was a 45% reduction in sudden death and a 35% reduction involving cardiac death.

A study involving 4,870 subjects found Red yeast rice reduced heart attacks and coronary deaths by 46%. The results were ones we are familiar with in the health food industry. Omega 3 fatty acids and red yeast rice play an important role in maintaining cardiovascular health!

Personally I would add CoQ10, especially the ubiquinol form, L-Carnitine, L-Lysine, L-proline, Vitamin C, B12, B6, folic acid, B2 and the minerals- calcium, magnesium, and potassium in the correct ratios, and D-ribose with trimethylglcine. Check out The Sinatra Solution, by Dr. Stephen Sinatra- an excellent book on heart health.

Spotlight on Omega 7 – the New Beauty Nutrient

Out of the shadows of history has emerged the story of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides)- Hippophae, translated, means “Shiny Horse”. Legend is that after a successful military campaign, the victorious Greeks were amazed to discover that the deserted and wounded horses of their enemy survived miraculously after taking shelter in a nearby jungle. More shocking than their survival, was that the horses emerged from this area stronger than ever with a striking feature: shiny and radiant hair.

Most people have heard of the essential fatty-acids Omega 3,6,and 9. Omega 3 is found in flax and fish oils, Omega 6 in borage and evening primrose, and Omega 9 in olives. Omega 7 (palmitoleic acid) is in Sea Buckthorn. Omega 7 is a naturally occurring component of healthy skin and is a highly effective antioxidant providing strong anti-aging support because of its ability to rein-in free radicals. It is also a strong emollient – a substance that soothes and moisturizes the skin and promotes the regeneration of tissues.

While modern studies report these benefits for the skin, ancient texts also reveal an extensive history of traditional use of sea buckthorn in Tibet & Mongolia for the body’s sensitive internal organs – in particular the mucous membranes that line the stomach/GI tract, upper respiratory tract and vagina. The ability of this botanical to help moisturize and sooth these sensitive internal areas in addition to its external skin benefits has made it a staple of traditional herbal systems.

Sea Buckthorn berries and seeds are also a source of Omega, 3, 6 and 9 – making it the optimal form of essential fatty-acid supplementation. It is one that everyone should consider incorporating into their skin and membrane health routine. It is truly a superfood and great for beautiful hair.

New Chapter Omega 7Modern science has a special technology called Supercritical CO2 extraction, which does not use hexane and other industrial solvents. This system delivers the full spectrum of constituents without any harsh solvent residues. It is important to find Omega 7 that has used this process for extraction. It is gentle with a low heat, low oxygen environment. One excellent source is New Chapter’s Omega 7.

Protecting Health from Toxic Endocrine Modifiers

Years ago Dr. John R. Lee gave a lecture on how the Florida Everglades were being contaminated by chemicals. Frogs, alligators and other amphibians were being born with both sex organs. The cougars that live in the Everglades were no longer fathering cubs. So scientists went to Montana and acquired virile cougars to bring to the area for mating. At first it went well, but after less than a year the cougars soon appeared the same as their other local male cougars: disinterested and lacking virility.

Hormones are regulated by the endocrine system and modern industrial progress has produced a large host of chemicals that disrupt the endocrine system resulting in incomplete sexual development, higher cancer risks, and reduced fertility. The environment has gone from 1 billion pound in 1940 of synthetic chemical production to over 387 billion pounds by 1990 to much higher amounts today.

These chemicals are found in nearly every place inside and outside the home. Many detergents, personal care products, cooking utensils, toys, packaging, and the multitude of chemical sprays used in agriculture are implicated.

Some cases the legislative acts to enhance health have dramatically backfired. One example is the very controversial addition of fluoride to drinking water and tooth pastes for protecting teeth from decay. The facts have now shown that over time several bad effects occur. Most prominent is the development of hip fractures. In New Zealand they were able to find this causal relationship because of their introduction of national dental care and the later onset of an epidemic of hip fractures. Other scientists have shown a relationship to low sperm counts and fertility rates as well as hormone disruption.

One of the most powerful disrupters is the class of Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) which interferes with gene expression and the glandular system. These chemicals can be found in cosmetics, cleaners, paints, pest control products and industrial cleaners. They are a man made chemical that can mimic the female hormone estrogen, and in its more lethal form when it becomes chemically reduced to Nonylphenol (NP) has killed certain fish life after 96 hours of exposure.

Recently bisphenol A was in the news. It is found in many plastics such as reusable water bottles, dental sealants and tin can linings. It is being studied for its ability to affect fetal development and breast cancer.

The most prevalent endocrine disruptor is a class of plastics called PVC (polyvinyl chloride). They contain chemicals called phthalates.  These major endocrine disruptors are found nearly everywhere from the tile floors we walk on to underarm deodorants. These plasticizers are common in plastic bags, inflatable toys, shampoo and many common household items.

The endocrine system is made up of the thyroid, parathyroid glands, the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, the adrenal glands, the ovaries and testis. The stomach, kidney and pancreas are also part of the system. The sexual hormones in particular seem influenced by these chemicals which have harmful estrogenic influences to both sexes creating infertility and cancer.

What you can do:
It seems impossible to completely avoid exposure to these chemicals, though selective buying is essential for clean products. You can get a fair evaluation of these products at http://www.besafenet.com/pvc/ or just enter non-toxic products in Google and find a host of choices from household to furniture and bedding. An excellent product link is http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/parentsguide/index.php?nothanks=1.

Nutritionally there are supplements that aid protection. The most familiar one is DIM (di-indolyl methane) which is present in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts. It aids in the breakdown of estrogen into beneficial or “good” estrogen metabolites (known as 2-hydoxy estrogens). At the same time , DIM reduces the level of “bad” estrogen metabolites (16-hydoxy estrogens) which can cause unwanted weight gain, and breast, uterine and prostate cancers. It is highly recommended for women on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), or who are at risk for breast cancer.

There are many other nutrients that help protect against environmental toxins; such as, vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, vitamin E with selenium, zinc, pantothenic acid (B5), thiamine (B1), alfalfa, apple pectin, and alpha lipoic acid. Some of my favorites are N-A-C, (N-acetyl cysteine), antioxidant enzymes such as SOD (super oxide dismutase) and amino acids such as L-Carnosine. Lignans found in flaxseed are potent detoxifiers and the Essiac Formula is truly remarkable. One can also take herbs that strengthen the endocrine system, especially adaptogenic herbs such Ginseng, Suma, and Eleuthero.
