Bits of Humor

“If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.” -- Mickey Mantle

“My doctor recently told me that jogging could add years to my life. I think he was right. I feel ten years older already.” -- Milton Berle

Web Site "Health Info" Feature

Looking for information on a particular health issue? Our website is a great place to start.

For example, if you wanted to know about “rheumatoid arthritis” you would click on the Health Info tab, go to Living Naturally Health Conditions » A » Arthritis rheumatoid – and there you are!

It contains a wealth of information: signs and symptoms, causes, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment approach, lifestyle, medications, surgery and other procedures, nutrition and dietary supplements broken down into diet, and detail for supplements and herbs. It also includes acupuncture, chiropractic, exercise, hydrotherapy or spa therapy, mechanical aids, homeopathy, mind body medicine, Ayurveda, yoga, herbal remedies, and Tai Chi. It then goes on to take in other considerations such as pregnancy, warnings and precautions, prognosis and complications. It ends with full documentation of supporting research.

Acai - Oprah Picks a Winner!

Are supplements boring? Not as far as the media is concerned. They seem to enjoy either bashing or lauding them. Lately it has been a little of both. The latest supplement to receive positive media attention is Acai. Paradise Herbs has an excellent one in vegicaps, and we have it at 40% off MSRP. Here’s what they say about it:

"Acai is loaded with antioxidants! It contains 10-30 times the anthocyanins of red wine, more beta carotene than carrots, more iron than spinach and 500 times more vitamin C by weight than oranges. Other valuable nutrients include B1, B2, B6, E, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phytosterols, omegas 3, 6, 9. It is almost a perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with 21 valuable trace minerals which are vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration. Paradise Herbs Acai is 4 times stronger than ordinary berries, is ethically wild crafted and our suppliers encourage fair trade. Acai-pure is clearly the super food of the twenty first century!"

Told You So! -- The Marvels of Resveratrol

It is gratifying when the mass media presents one of our favorite nutrients in a positive way. A January 25th spot on CBS 60 Minutes highlighted the amazing effects of Resveratrol. According to the program, Resveratrol offers part of an answer to a longer, healthier life. It is a remarkable nutrient. So as a review, here’s our summary reprinted from our newsletter in February of 2007:

Resveratrol is a flavonoid or polyphenol classified as a phytoestrogen that acts as an antifungal agent in grapes. Biologically, it acts as an antioxidant, antimutagen, anti-inflammatory and neuro-protector. Most importantly, studies involving resveratrol use in rats dramatically increased both their endurance and longevity.
Studies indicate resveratrol helps stop the formation of blood clots, prevents cholesterol from blocking arteries, and may reduce the risk of leukemia and some forms of cancer. It also shows promise as a compound to protect against certain classes of environmental toxins, fungal and bacterial attacks, and as an aid in the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss.
The most abundant source of resveratrol is Japanese Knotweed, also known as Chinese Tiger Cane (Hu Zhang). It is also found in less potent doses in red wines -- especially muscadine table wines, where fermentation increases its abundance -- and boiled peanuts.

We currently carry many resveratrol products. Here are two from Jarrow Formulas. The first is pure Resveratrol in a 100mg vegetarian capsule, one of the highest dosages in the industry. The other is called Resveratrol Synergy™ a blend with other anti-oxidant nutrients.

Shame on Scientific American

At the same time as nutrition is getting positive recognition, I was shocked to see it senselessly bashed in a mailing I received from a great magazine, Scientific American. Here’s my edited email to Scientific American:

I just received your promotional material for subscribing to Scientific American. In the envelope was a red flier entitled "Fact or Fiction". One of the statements was "Vitamin supplements improve your health." The final answer was "fiction".
That was an unscientific response, negligent and harmful. The information throughout scientific literature continually substantiates the health improvements from vitamin supplementation nationally and internationally. Is Scientific American unaware that there is not a single study showing Americans even come close to the minimum daily nutritional requirements for vitamins? Is Scientific American unaware that nutritional values of food have declined rapidly with industrial large farming? Is Scientific American unaware that every major health oriented organization including the American Medical Association now recommends that every person should supplement their diet with a multiple vitamin supplement? Such bad information tarnishes the reputation of a major scientific voice to an educated readership.

Spotlight on Carnosine – Small but Powerful!

Carnosine is a small peptide containing two amino acids, beta alanine and histidine. It’s found throughout the body -- the skeletal muscles, heart muscles, and the brain. It is being studied as one of the most important nutrients for aiding health and longevity.

Though more research is needed, hundreds of studies indicate a multitude of benefits. Body-builders and athletes have made L-Carnosine popular mainly because it helps increase muscle strength, mass and endurance. However, the latest studies indicate that it is an excellent anti-oxidant, helps protect against radiation damage, acts as a neurotransmitter, and chelates heavy metals out of the body, especially organic mercury such as that found in thiomersal, the preservative found in vaccinations.

Studies also indicate Carnosine promotes wound healing, aids in the eradication of Helicobacter Pylori (an organism linked to ulcers and stomach cancer), and therefore helps heal the stomach. PepZin GI® is a patented L-Carnosine product which has been shown to provide a defense against damaging assault on the stomach's mucosal cells. PepZin GI® also has the ability to "seek out" and encourage the repair of injured or thinning stomach tissue. It is a combination of zinc and L-Carnosine.

Other research indicates carnosine’s ability to protect against cataract formation and possibly even prevent the formation of beta amyloid, the substance found in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients.

Studies indicate even more uses with improving heart function, reducing inflammation and increasing immunity.

One of the most important functions research studies indicate is carnosine’s anti-glycation effect, which is where a protein molecule binds to a glucose molecule causing damage. It is considered a major contributor to complications from diabetes. Advanced glycation toughens tissues, hardens arteries, damages nerves, the lens and retina of the eye, and the kidneys. L-Carnosine appears to sacrifice itself by resembling the sites that glycation agents attack and aids the elimination process of damaged proteins.
