The Calcium Controversy

The media has finally paid attention to the calcium controversy. Though it is presented as though calcium is bad for people, it is long overdue as an important issue. First and foremost it is important to understand that calcium is good for people and a necessary mineral. Second, is to recognize that minerals must be balanced in order to be beneficial and not harmful.

In 1983 when vitamin sales reps came into the store they were amazed at the sharp increase of calcium sales. What had occurred is that reports extolling calcium’s benefits for osteoporosis had prompted doctors throughout the country to tell their patients to take 1500mgs of calcium carbonate a day. The reaction of the health food industry was ambivalent- great for business- bad for health.

Their concern was that calcium carbonate was the lowest, least usable form of calcium by the body- it was like swallowing 1500mgs of chalk a day. The health food industry had long recognized the benefits of calcium for osteoporosis because of the imbalance created by modern farming techniques which overused phosphate fertilizer producing plants high in phosphorous and low in calcium. This was made worse because phosphorous also pulls calcium out of the body.

The health food industry compensated for this problem by offering chelated calcium, calcium joined with amino acids, a highly assimilated form of calcium requiring much lower milligrams, and further, providing added magnesium since magnesium gets pulled from the body by calcium. By these simple measures osteoporosis was addressed in a safe balanced manner. The industry at that time and even now expressed fears that the long term use of straight calcium carbonate alone and in such high amounts could over time produce arthrosclerosis where calcium gets laid down in the circulatory system.

This danger has been confirmed now- years later, in studies from New Zealand. There, many studies have been done regarding minerals, especially due to the high number of carries (tooth decay) experienced by their population. In fact their studies prompted them to remove all fluoride from their drinking water due to its dangerous affects on bone development that had resulted in epidemic levels of hip fractures years later. Now their studies are vindicating the foresight of the health food industry and their early warnings regarding the use of calcium.

Here are some quick facts about calcium: It is the most abundant mineral in the body. It is vital for healthy bones and teeth with 99% of the body’s calcium found in the skeleton. Calcium is necessary for a regular heartbeat, muscular contraction, clotting of blood, and transmission of nerve impulses. However, too much or an imbalance can result with the body laying down calcium in soft tissue especially when there is present excessive cellular damage or high acidity. Calcium is also a natural pain reliever.

Science Redeems Vitamin E

Vitamin E (tocopherol) got bad press. It’s shameful, one single debunked report got exposure everywhere through the media defaming Vitamin E. That debunked report used only studies in which people died and also took vitamin E, probably to help live longer, but it claimed an association of Vitamin E with early death. It was a claim based on association but not hard science. On a meta analysis, not a study. Like the comedian who said, “Don’t go to bed, most people end up dying there.” However, that is not science or valid proof of cause, that’s a guess using statistics to find possible links or associations.

The scientific facts about Vitamin E are stated in The PDR (Physician’s Desk Reference) for Nutritional Supplements. In all their extensive searches of vitamin E studies they found NO reports of over dosage of Vitamin E in any form. (p.519, Physicians Desk Reference for Nutritional Supplements). That extensive research proves Vitamin E is one of the safest supplements one can take. It eliminates the bogus link to early death about Vitamin E.

So here are facts from hundreds of individual studies and not a meta analysis:

  • The average human diet supplies 10mg (14.8 IU) of vitamin E daily and 30% of adults have low blood Vitamin E levels.
  • The usual therapeutic dosage of vitamin E is 400 – 800 IU per day.
  • Physicians and naturopaths use Vitamin E as an aid in treating fibrocystic breasts and premenstrual syndrome.
  • A deficiency of Vitamin E creates infertility. Tocopherol is Greek for “the ability to bear children” reflecting the importance of Vitamin E to fertility.
  • Vitamin E 400 to 1500 IU plus Vitamin C 500 to 1,000mgs daily reduced the risk of Alzheimer's disease by 64 to 78 percent.
  • The Institute of Medicine sets a daily upper limit of vitamin E at 1,500 IU. The National Academy of Sciences defines the "Tolerable Upper Intake Level” (UL) for vitamin E at 1,500 IU for natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol).
  • Athletes seeking to prevent Free Radical damage during and following exercise use 1,200 IU per day.
  • Dosages of up to 3,200 IU of Vitamin E used daily in a wide variety of subjects for periods of up to two years with no side (bad) effects.
  • Substances interfering with vitamin E absorption: chitosan, glucomannan, estrogens (contraceptive pill), chlorine, iron- as ferrous sulfate, pharmaceutical antibiotics, pharmaceutical antacids, the pharmaceuticals: cholestyramine-colestipol-probucol, olestra, alcohol, tobacco, fish oils and cod liver oils.
  • Using Pharmaceutical Anticoagulants, such as heparin, not to consume more than 400 IU per day of supplementary Vitamin E (combination can increase risk of excessive bleeding). However, Vitamin E is not a blood thinner but smoothes out blood cells.
  • Recommend avoiding vitamin E supplementation 2 to 4 weeks prior to surgery. Afterwards it is an aid in healing.

The Magic of Mushrooms

Could it be that mushrooms are from outer space as Terrence McKenna suggests? Why not, Discover Magazine reports astral dust is building chemical reactions that build organic molecules of formaldehyde, ammonia and others. Meanwhile religions throughout history have utilized mushrooms for the psychotropic and health effects. Rulers have restricted their use solely to themselves. So what is it about mushrooms that produced such interest and popularity?

Mushrooms appear to learn mazes quicker and better than rats. They also represent the largest living organism on earth as illustrated in our comic strip of Professor Health. They are also one of the most highly valued components in the world's herbal arsenal of health nutrients affecting immunity, intelligence and countless biological systems.

Here we have the master Mushroom man Paul Stamets in a personal short video by Daryl Hannah. Paul Stamets is one of the world's leading mycologists and author of several reference works on medical mushrooms, he says "Lion's Mane mushroom mycelium is nature's nutrients for your neurons." It appears to stimulate nerve cells, nerve growth and has major implications for Alzheimer's and other mental health concerns.

The Chinese have known this benefit for thousands of years, as the ancient herbalists promised nerves of steel and the memory of a lion to the privileged few who were allowed to eat this restricted delicacy. The breakdown in healthy neurological function can help be prevented by adding Lion's Mane mushroom to the diet.

Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium Erinaceus) has been highly prized in Chinese traditional medicine. It was reserved for the Emperors and used by Chinese doctors as a curative for digestive tract problems such as ulcers, and stomach cancers. Its beta glucan polysaccharides, along with polypeptides and fatty acids have a lot to do with these curative effects.  Clinical studies have shown that these polysaccharides, along with adenosine and oleanolic acids, stimulate induction of interferons and modulation of the immune system, boosting the white blood cell count to help the healing process.  These substances also enhance the function of the gastric mucus barrier, accelerate the healing of ulcers, and exhibit anti-inflammatory effects.

Lion's Mane helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels.  It is completely safe, showing no signs of toxicity or side effects in any scientific research.  One of the most exciting areas of potential is its ability to help combat some of the symptoms and underlying causes of dementia and Alzheimer's disease as well as peripheral neurological dysfunction.
